Shrek: Fairy Tale Freakdown
The summer 2001 blockbuster goes miniature with this tournament fighter from TDK Mediactive, Inc. The game's six starting characters are Shrek, Princess Fiona, Thelonius, the Big Bad Wolf, Monsieur Hood and Pinocchio, and you can unlock three additional characters by defeating them in battle -- we won't spoil the surprise, but a certain cantankerous prince is just bound to want a piece of the action. Each fighter has three basic moves -- punch, kick and block -- and three special moves in the best tradition of beat-'em-ups. For example, press Left, Down, Right and A to have Shrek belch forth a fireball. Charming, we're sure, but good fighting strategy all the same. Power-ups that lend your character invincibility, a speed boost or double strength are available for skilful combatants, although you won't be able to use them if your health meter drops below 33 percent - so fight fair! There are three difficulty levels and a Practice Mode in which you get to battle fairy-tale punchbags. The nine arenas include Grimm-ly appropriate settings like dark forests, castles and rickety bridges. If you're a fight fan looking for something a little different, Shrek: Fairy Tale Freak Down is the perfect piece of punch-up pie.
