Challenging and hilarious in equal parts, Disgaea DS recreates the first chapter in the story of Netherworld – a cursed land where evil reigns and monsters thrive. The main protagonist is the demon Prince Laharl, who has awoken from a record-beating two-year sleep to find that his father, King Krichevskoy, has departed the immortal world and that every other demon in town has his eye on the crown!

It’s time for you to step up and lead Prince Laharl as he embarks on a mission to thwart all these pretenders to the throne. In your quest for supremacy amongst the denizens of the underworld, you’ll meet a whole range of characters you can add to your team – even some fallen-angel love interest! As an in-depth role-playing game, there’s a great deal of strategic planning to be undertaken as you level up your characters and equip them with weapons and spells from a massive selection of items. There’s even an entirely separate Items World, where you get a chance to build your strength before continuing on in the main game.

The 3D world of Disgaea DS is shown on the Touch Screen, while the top screen shows the world broken down into a grid format. You can control the action using either the Nintendo DS buttons or the stylus, depending on your preference. The combat is turn-based, which gives you plenty of opportunity to plan your attacks carefully – and you’ll need to, given the hordes of enemies you’ll need to vanquish.

Fans of the Disgaea series will find much to explore as the Nintendo DS version adds a number of exciting new features. Firstly, there’s an entire new story mode, based around Etna and her efforts to come out top in the Beauty Queen stakes. You can also unlock new bonus characters, go in search of a secret music shop and take advantage of Demon Gadgets – randomly generated gadgets that can really give your team a boost!

The most notable new feature, which deepens the Disgaea experience and adds an element of puzzling, is the introduction of the “Geo Cube”. You can spot Geo Cubes as different-coloured squares on the game grid you can see in the top screen. These squares affect the player or character standing on them in various magical ways if the squares are activated with a matching Geo Symbol. You can even destroy the Geo Cubes if you think they’ll do more harm than good in your particular predicament. Careful planning is therefore required and you truly have to watch your step!

You can also team up with a friend and battle head-to-head with new Multi-Card Play or get in touch with your fellow demon players wirelessly and exchange items and data! There is enough gameplay to challenge you for many, many engrossing hours. The only question is: have you got the stamina for the Netherworld?
