If you yearn for the challenge of a music game on the go, listen up! Harmonix and MTV Games are bringing the electrifying Rock Band series of rhythm-action games to the Nintendo DS for the first time, with Rock Band 3.
Unlike other incarnations of music games there’s no need to plug anything in – all you need is the game, your Nintendo DS and a whole lotta rhythm.
Learning to play is easy as pie! On the Touch Screen you’ll be presented with a note highway containing moving, coloured marks that show the rhythm you need to match. These marks move towards a line at the front of the screen - when any coloured mark reaches the line, you press the button that corresponds to the colour shown in order to play the note. Do it right and the song plays correctly, miss the moment and it doesn’t sound so swell… But practice makes perfect!
In Rock Band 3 you can play famous songs as a band, performing the vocals, bass, drums and guitar tracks for each song by pressing the buttons in time. But one pair of hands will be plenty – it’s easy to swap between the different parts and be a whole band on your own.
The game has an all-star track list of 25 songs spanning 5 decades, with tunes from hit artists such as: The White Stripes, The Doors, Smash Mouth, Queen, Paramore, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Roxette, Rilo Kiley and Joan Jett, to name a few.
With 8 rockin’ game modes there’s tons to do on the go: you can follow the story of your band in classic Career Mode, take on Road Challenges or enjoy any number of deliciously tricksy musical trials. There’s even the option to create and customise your wicked cool band members with over 100 unique togs!
In single player you switch between the different tracks of each song at the touch of a button, but Multi-Card Play lets up to 4 players perform together with different instruments, no switching required! There’s also the option to create a little friction in competitive multiplayer matches against a mate – after all, it wouldn’t be realistic without your very own rival…
