Sonic Advance 2

System: Game Boy Advance Release date: 21/03/2003

When Sonic the Hedgehog was first released way back in 1991, who would have thought that it would be beaten in graphics, gameplay and sound by a console you can carry in your pocket. But that's exactly what's so special about Sonic Advance 2.

Sonic Team has squeezed in more great graphics, gameplay, animation, action and acrobatics than most previous Sonic games put together. And, best of all, you can play it anywhere. You don't play a Sonic game for its in-depth plot, so suffice to say that Dr Eggman (or Dr Robotnik – take your pick) is up to his usual tricks. So off go Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and newcomer Cream the Rabbit – who each have their own set of skills – to save the day.

You'll need to complete the game with each one to see all that Sonic Advance 2 has to offer. And there's a lot to unlock. The Tiny Chao Garden returns, in which you raise a Chao creature by feeding it and playing mini-games. There are also two multiplayer games for up to four players, and you can even link to Sonic Adventure 2 Battle for Nintendo GameCube. As long as you're not expecting any great revolutions in gameplay, Sonic Advance 2 delivers the goods. It's pure – and best of all portable – Sonic at its best.
