Ghost 'n Goblins

System: Game Boy Color Release date: 24/08/2001

Capcom's classic corpse-crushing crusade creeps onto Game Boy Color. Before Capcom introduced the world to survival horror with Resident Evil, they were pumping out 8-bit zombies and demons galore in Ghosts 'N Goblins. Ghosts 'N Goblins premiered on the NES way back in 1986, and gamers were immediately obsessed with Arthur's quest to pierce the heart of evil with his trusty javelin. Ghosts 'N Goblins for Game Boy Color is almost an exact reproduction of the original NES game, with only a few minor changes to the gameplay. Players guide the heroic knight Arthur through seven stages, laying waste to an army of dark demons along the way. Instead of treasure or a beautiful damsel, all that awaits Arthur at the end of his quest is a battle with Lucifer. The Game Boy Color edition mercifully supplies a password at the end of each stage, unlike the NES version, which forced players to finish the game in one sitting. There are three difficulty levels. The entire game is based on jumping and shooting, but the sheer number of enemies makes this an extremely challenging quest. Digital Eclipse has done an excellent job recreating the look and feel of the original game, producing a nostalgic and super-enjoyable return to the roots of horror gaming.
