Speed Kings

System: Nintendo GameCube Release date: 04/07/2003

Speed Kings can be best summed-up in three words: Burnout on bikes. And if that hasn't got you smelling the sweat and oil already, you'll do a wheelie when we tell you it's from a hit development team that specialise in bike racers.

Combining the best of both worlds: the slick graphics and high-speed thrills of a simulation with the fun and pick-up-and-playability of an arcade racer, Speed Kings takes motorcycle racing off the track and onto the streets. There are 12 circuits in all, set in a variety of international locations from London to Las Vegas - all packed with regular traffic going about their daily business.

And here's where Speed Kings pulls ahead of the rest of the racing game competition. When you're tearing down the road at 150 mph and a truck pulls across the road, what do you do? If you're driving a car, you have two choices: swerve out of the way or crash. But if you're behind the handlebars of a motorbike (and you have nerves of steel) you could slide the bike under the truck's trailer and drive on your merry way. And that's just one of the crazy stunts you can pull in Speed Kings.

Don't fancy going under the offending obstruction? Then simply jump over it. But you can't expect to survive all this stuntman-style action unscathed. Crash the bike and it will suffer real-time damage which affects your chances of finishing the race. And, like Burnout, it's almost worth crashing just to watch the spectacular smash-up sequences. Speed Kings is packed with features. There are 22 bikes to choose from, each based on real-world models - plus authentic leathers and gear from some of the top names in the motorbike business. Plus, each rider has a unique riding style, and special gestures with which to taunt their fellow racers.

If you like racing games fast, furious and full of fun, then Speed Kings is worth taking for a spin.
