Set sail for open seas and become a swashbuckling pirate as a beloved gaming franchise makes its debut on Wii. Sid Meier’s Pirates! will transport you to a world of duels, treasure maps and drama as you step into the shoes of a junior buccaneer with an eye on becoming one of the most infamous adventurers ever to fly the Jolly Rodger.

To get started, you’ll take the helm of one of 27 fully customisable ships, enhancing and upgrading it as you go by adding powerful ammo, mighty cannons and other valuable nautical advancements. You can even tweak the look of your trusty schooner and the character under your control to ensure your image is every bit as threatening as the equipment you’re packing. 

The life of a pirate isn’t all at sea though, and before long you’ll descend upon unsuspecting ports to amass a motley crew of seafaring bandits and perhaps even a few pieces of eight. On dry land you’ll also collect treasure maps, undertake daring missions and perform courageous rescues before setting sail once more. Then again, maybe you should hang around on shore a little longer to dish out some pirate-style justice to local braggarts and attempt to steal the heart of the Governer’s daughter; an ally whose affections are well worth winning.

Things are every bit as exciting back on the water, where you’ll run into plenty of other salty seadogs attempting to make a living on the wrong side of the law. Alas, the ocean isn’t big enough for everyone, and sooner or later you’re bound to come to blows. Thankfully, when you are forced to unsheathe your cutlass, the Wii Remote ensures you can wield it with unrivalled accuracy. With the right motions you’ll be parrying and countering your opponents into submission before they know what’s hit them – an art that may prove to be just as essential in an unruly tavern as it is on the decks of passing pirate vessels.

The unique features of the Wii Remote also come into play as you get to grips with the Pirates! series’ famous mini-games. Integrated seamlessly into the action, the games include everything from Ship Combat to Dancing, as well as two Wii-exlusive additions in the shape of Bombardment (an opportunity to soften up a target port before docking) and Lock Picking (the only way to escape from certain predicaments you land yourself in).
